Susan Thompson - Birth Doula CD(DONA)

Susan Thompson is a Dona certified birth doula and area educator. She trained with Tara and Birthing Gently in 2011 and has been working with them since, primarily in their volunteer program. Susan believes that birthing support is a right for all expectant parents.
The mother of two boys–one C-section and one VBAC–Susan coauthored, performed and toured a play, The Wild Place, based on her dreams around pregnancy and experiences during the first years of parenting. She believes our stories of childbirth become part of the fabric of who we are, and provide us moments of profound insight into our resilience, power and vulnerability.
Susan knows it is a profound honor to be a support person and witness to the mom and her team on their birth journey. She is also respectful of the talented and knowledgeable medical staff we have in the Boston-area.
Susan’s doula journey began years before she knew the term doula, when she assisted at a friend’s birth in rural Mexico. Later, as a young mother, she continued to assist at friends’ births. It wasn’t until later that she learned there was a term for what she did and signed up for doula training. Her experience has taught her to follow the mother because, well, the mother knows! Childbirth is an opportunity to strengthen the ties between mother, partner, family and community, and Susan keeps a
keen eye out for enhancing these supports during a mother’s birth experience. In addition to her work as a doula, Susan has a doctorate in Theater History from Tufts and teaches in area schools.
