Mary teaches the Breastfeeding Education class offered at some of Birthing Gently’s Birth Doula Workshops. This 3-hour workshop, offered to birth- and postpartum-related professionals, covers the basics of breastfeeding, and fulfills DONA International’s breastfeeding education requirement.

For expectant families Mary offers lactation education classes and lactation consulting services. Breastfeeding is a learned art both for mother and baby. We recommend you take a breastfeeding class with our International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Mary Rastauskas, during your last trimester. During this class, you will become acquainted with the “ins and outs” of breastfeeding, be able to ask questions, and share your concerns. Evidence-based education will teach you what to expect when nursing a newborn and will contribute to your confidence when feeding your baby. She can also assist you with common breastfeeding struggles in the early days postpartum with practical knowledge and specialized care tailored to meet your needs.

Mary has a Master’s Degree in Education and is a licensed teacher for the Massachusetts Department of Education. She currently works full-time as a teacher at a local high school’s Healthcare Occupations CTE program. She has twenty-plus years of experience in teaching all age groups in academic, professional, and informal settings. Mary is also a registered nurse and has worked closely with mothers, babies, and family members as an antepartum, labor and delivery, and postpartum nurse.  Working in a hospital Birthing Center for several years inspired Mary to obtain her IBLCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification in 2015.  As an IBCLC, which is the "gold standard" in lactation consulting expertise and excellence worldwide, she provides professional and community-based breastfeeding education. In the future, Mary is planning to provide private in-home classes, consultations, and lactation support.

When not teaching her high school students, planning lessons, or serving as an IBCLC, Mary enjoys time with her husband and two school-aged sons. Hockey games, piano lessons, and swim classes fill the majority of family free-time but reading a good book and napping on her hammock while camping at the lake are Mary's favorite recharge activities!
