Birth Doula Profile - Katia Powell-Laurent
Katia Powell-Laurent.jpg

Katia (kah-tee-AH) has always known that she wanted to support women as they make the life-changing transition into motherhood. Being intrigued by childbirth at such a young age can be partly attributed to her mother being one of fourteen siblings and her father being one of eight siblings. She is a birth and postpartum doula, a holistic health practitioner, and the founder of a digital nutrition company that addresses the unique nutritional needs and cultural heritage of BIPOC women and the importance of preconception

nutrition for the mother-to-be. One of her goals for her clients is to provide up-to-date, unbiased, evidence-based information combined with real-life healthcare experience and local resources for the mother-to-be and her partner during their journey through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Giving birth is a sacred, transformative time for you and your family, and Katia’s intention is for her clients and partners to feel listened to, supported, and empowered to make informed decisions about their birth choices. Katia wants you to feel empowered and

supported during your birth experience, no matter where or how you choose to give birth. She believes that your feelings, preferences, and reproductive rights should be respected and honored. To help you achieve a beautiful birth, she provides evidence-based

tools and resources that prioritize the needs of you and your baby. Whether you choose a hospital, birthing center, or home birth, and whether you give birth vaginally, via c-section, or with a surrogate, Katia is there to support you.

Katia works with clients who are currently pregnant with the goal of having a healthy pregnancy and preparing for their birth. She also works with clients struggling with fertility issues and helps them understand their body’s natural fertility cycle, provides guidance to explore fertility options, and prepares their body and mind for pregnancy. As a client, your conversations with Katia will form the basis of your birth plan—a plan that is person-centered, you-centered, and family-centered.

She has worked in healthcare for over twenty years at some of the most prestigious hospital institutions in the world. Her doctoral studies focused on nutrition, birth equity, obesity prevention, nutrition, black maternal health and racial and ethnic health disparities.

From working as an EMT and lactation consultant in training to working in the ER, NICU, and cardiology, she is very comfortable helping her clients navigate a complex medical system and providing them with the resources to help them make informed decisions about their birth choices. Katia has been told that she has a very calm demeanor that helps to relax and ground patients in stressful medical scenarios. She works diligently to create a safe space for women to help them create a birth plan and access resources to make informed and empowered decisions about their healthcare, how their body is treated, and birth choices.

Her digital nutrition and advocacy company is dedicated to addressing the critical issue of unequal maternal health outcomes faced by Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) women in the United States. Unfortunately, black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to white women. Given the dire statistics surrounding maternal health disparities, she has taken action to address the underlying structural issues that contribute to reproductive and birth inequities. Investing in healthier pregnancies, labors, and postpartum recovery benefits the individuals giving birth and leads to healthier children and families.

Katia currently lives in Boston, MA, in the Fenway neighborhood, which she adores. She lives with her husband and a feisty black cat named "Egypt." When you become a client, you will quickly learn that her favorite color is pink and that Katia firmly believes that you deserve a birth team that is 100% committed and focused on you. She looks forward to working with you!
