Childbirth Education - Deborah Robbins, RN BSN MPA LCCE
Deborah’s passion and dedication to birthing woman started in the early 1970’s as a nurse. During this time, it was common practice for mothers not to have an epidural, to be moved from a labor room, to delivery and recovery rooms, and to separate mothers and babies during the postpartum period and hospital stay. Often there was limited support from friends and family and Deborah functioned as both a nurse and a birth doula.
As years passed the model of care changed and the focus was placed on the family! It was terrific! No more moving from room to room, partners and family members were in attendance. Moms and babies were encouraged to be kept together, providing the chance right after birth for bonding by lying the newborn skin-to-skin with the mother, supporting breastfeeding, and incorporating mother-baby care. As birth became more “high-tech”, Deborah’s focus shifted to the care of high-risk mothers and making their births more family-centered, by using “high tech with high touch”.
Her career as a nurse has been diverse, both in and out of the hospital setting as a staff labor and birth nurse in hospitals across the country. Deborah has held management positions in labor and birth, parent childbirth education at Brigham & Women’s Hospital Boston, MA, and as a Perinatal Consultant for a manufacturer of hospital systems and equipment.
Deborah was on the design team for the modern birthing bed, and as a consultant/educator she traveled the country educating doctors, registered nurses, and ancillary staff about “family-focused care” and interactive positioning for labor and birth. Her goal in this position was to advocate for families while educating hospital staff on evidence-based research in labor and birth. She has presented at various conferences and workshops throughout the United States.
As a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, her goal is to give non-biased, evidence-based education. Your birth is yours and no one else’s. She will work with you to plan your birth within safe guidelines. She will discuss how you, your partner, and your doula can effectively communicate your needs and wants to the staff. Various policies and procedures will be explained so you can make informed decisions. Deborah looks forward to sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with you.
Birth is a life changing event like no other…Birthing Gently is here for you.
