When I was getting ready to give birth to my first child, I predicted, as I planned to have a delivery with the least amount of interventions as possible, that I would need lots of emotional support as well as someone who could coach me along all the stages of delivery, validating the normalcy of the experience. I knew that my husband would prove to be an amazing partner, but I feared that upon seeing me in pain, he might be prone to support the interventions offered. Thus, I began the process of researching a doula. I was so very fortunate to have Tara fulfill that role. After my first birth, I knew that one day, the role of doula, was one I wanted to claim. Years later, once again I was accompanied by another wonderful doula on my second birth journey. I am now the very proud mother of a daughter and son, ages six and two respectively. Both birth experiences were perfect. That is not to say that all went as planned, but never in my life have I felt so strong, capable and empowered. Although I do take some of the credit, I also know that, without a doubt, my husband and my doulas helped create the ideal environment, which allowed me to find my inner strength. Pregnancy, delivery and parenting are each journeys that can take many paths. I will always treasure the memories surrounding the births of my children fondly and I enjoy helping other women create their ideal birth experiences.
Helping to create and support families has been the focus of my career. For the first 17 years, I did so as the Director of an adoption agency, and now as a doula. For those 17 years, I was so fortunate to counsel and support women who were making an adoption plan for their child as well as work with the adoptive families who were entrusted to parent these children. All these people taught me about resolve, determination, self-sacrifice, and patience. I feel that all these characteristics apply to birthing and doulaing.
I am a licensed independent clinical social worker and an experienced therapist. My birth philosophy is to encourage women and their partners to be open to all the possibilities surrounding birth and to become educated and well informed about the options and choices they will need to make. I also believe in our body’s ability to know exactly what to do. I am currently in the process of obtaining my Dona certification and plan to have it within the next few months. My best wishes to you and your partner as you embark on this next chapter of your life.
