Birth Doula Profile - Sasha Weigel

Sasha Weigel

I wish that every woman can have an empowering birth. To me, birth is the most beautiful, most sacred, most powerful culmination of the human experience.

Because birthing is a great challenge both physically and psychologically, I believe it is vital for the mother to be nurtured and supported. This is my goal as a doula: to provide mothering if she needs it, to bolster her if she’s discouraged, to help her find comfort if she’s exhausted, and to make her feel safe if she is scared. Perhaps she will want quiet support in the form of massage or acupressure, or she may prefer more comprehensive support such as assistance with breathing, position changes, or visualizations. Maybe she’ll simply want information support because many questions can arise. Or maybe she’d like support in the form of advocacy so she is confident that her preferences are being heard by all caretakers. I believe a doula’s role in the birthroom should be malleable; she should at all times attempt to intuit what the mother needs.

If she has a husband or partner attending the birth, I will enjoy working as a team alongside him or her. I strongly believe that a doula should always assume that the husband or partner is the primary birth companion and should never overstep this boundary unless asked. Every mother, partner and infant deserves birth to be a positive experience, for it is in the birthroom that the foundations of a healthy family are laid.

I can promise any future client, whether this is your first birth or you are an experienced mom of many, that I will be there to support you wholly and be constantly mindful of your needs for the duration of your labor. I will give of myself without reservation to you and do everything in my power to make you feel as relaxed, peaceful and secure as possible.

On a personal note, I am a DONA-trained doula and I am currently studying to become a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) at New York University.
