Birth Doula Profile - Liron Sharon

Tamra Brown

My name is Liron, and I am originally from Israel. For the past few years, I've lived with my family in Massachusetts.
During my studies as a graphic designer, I realized that I need to do something with my hands, but radically different. I felt the urge to work with people, support them, and guide their hearts. During our first US stay, back in 2001, I obtained my massage therapist certification from NHI College in California. From that point on, I became hungry for knowledge which helped me obtain my Birth Doula certification along with several other support and healing therapies.
When I work with my clients, I'm trying to help their body beyond the traditional physical therapy. In my treatments, I use all the knowledge I gained - from Swedish massage through deep tissue massage, Shiatsu, Reiki to Craniosacral therapy.
I am a well experienced birth doula with a proven record of more than one hundred labors and counting...

While pregnant with my first child, I searched for a Doula, mostly because I didn’t
know what to expect from the labor- I thought about a natural childbirth, but wasn’t sure if I can do that…. Actually, most of my feelings were of fear.

My first birth wound up as an elective C-Section, because my girl was in a bridge position. Right after that ordeal I was very confused; I felt a great joy of having my first born but that was mixed with guilt and sadness due to the way it ended up. At that time I was already a massage therapist and was considering becoming a Doula. I knew that there must be a different way to give birth- to take an active part in that powerful experience; feel it, be present and get all the support needed.
The first labor I supported as a Doula took place when I was already pregnant with my second child. My second pregnancy was part of my Doula 'pregnancy', during that period of time; I learned something new from each and every labor I supported. First would be to carefully listen, truly understand the woman needs. Another important fact is to effectively get the spouse involved throughout the entire process. The second childbirth as a VBAC (Vaginal Birth after C-Section), was completely different. That time I was actually there, I took an active part in MY labor! I signed a new pact with my body.

My third child was born in the US, this time the language was different, the culture was also different but I had the same old desire. After that labor I realized we don’t really need to share the same culture, we don't really need to come from the same place- women act the same way while in labor and have the same needs regardless of their origins.

My belief is that every labor can be beautiful and very empowering, while the woman feels safe, supported and listened to.
